Personal Correspondence At Auction

Author and Hollywood screenwriter and producer Samuel Peeples was a dedicated collector of SF and fantasy, and was active in Edgar Rice Burroughs fandom. When Peeples decided to dispose of his collection shortly before he passed away, he contacted Bob Weinberg and a friend of Bob’s to assist him. In connection with that, Bob acquired a few interesting items for his own collection. Among those are the items that make up Lot 15 of the first part of the Robert Weinberg Estate Auction being held at the 2019 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center). The auction will be held on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019.

Lot 15 consists of various items that Arkham House publisher August Derleth sent to Peeples in the early 1960’s. These include three letters addressed to Peeples and signed by Derleth, one letter addressed to Patrons of AH signed by Derleth, and a postcard showing Derleth’s home addressed to Peeples and signed by Derleth. The letters contain interesting content on Lovecraft’s “The Shunned House,” Weird Tales, Derleth’s own work, and more.

Here’s one of ’em, the March 1942 issue.

There will also be some original art in the first part of the Robert Weinberg Estate Auction being held at the 2019 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center)! The auction will be held on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019.

Here’s one of those pieces. From artist Gary Gianni, this is from the Wandering Star edition of “The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane” by Robert E. Howard.

Scientific Detective Promotional

Here’s one of the rare items that will be auctioned as part of the first part of the Robert Weinberg Estate Auction being held at the 2019 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center). The auction will be held on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019.

Double Your Excitement!

For tonight’s post, I thought I’d offer up a double dose of excitement! This year’s Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention will be held April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center. Among the roughly 200 lots of pulps and other goodies that will be in part one of the Robert Weinberg estate auction (being held the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019) will be the complete ten issue run of the rare pulp Excitement!
Here’s two of ’em that will be auctioned that Friday night. Dated September and November 1930, both feature great covers by Jerome Rozen.

Ain’t It Weird?

There will be plenty of cool pulps auctioned as part of the first part of the Robert Weinberg Estate Auction being held at the 2019 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center). The auction will be held on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019.

Bob’s favorite pulp title was Weird Tales, and several of his Weird Tales issues will be in the 2019 session (with more to come in 2020 and 2021). Here’s one that will be auctioned this April — a gorgeous copy of the March 1924 issue. Highlights inside include tales by H.P. Lovecraft — the title story, ghost-written for Houdini, and “The Rats in the Walls.”

Canadian Weird Tales

There were two series of Canadian versions of Weird Tales, the first running from June 1935 to July 1936, the second running from May 1942 to November 1951. The second series featured different covers and interior art than the U.S. edition, and sometimes different content, in some cases printing material from the pulp Short Stories, being published by the same publisher.

There will be several Weird Tales pulps from the second Canadian series auctioned as part of the first part of the Robert Weinberg Estate Auction being held at the 2019 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention (April 12-14, 2019 at the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center). The auction will be held on the evening of Friday, April 12, 2019.

Here’s one of them, November 1944, which draws its contents from the July 1944 U.S. edition, though in a different order, and with different art. Besides the Robert Bloch and Seabury Quinn tales mentioned on the cover, it also contains stories from Ray Bradbury, August Derleth, Manly Wade Wellman and others, as well as a poem by Robert E. Howard.

We’re looking to inject some excitement into your pulp collecting life at this year’s Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention! And that’s on top of the 180 tables of pulps, paperbacks, hardcovers, original art, golden age comics and more that will be for sale in our massive dealer room.
Here’s one of the Excitement issues that will be auctioned that Friday night. Dated October 1930, it features a great cover by Jerome Rozen for the SF tale, “Kosmac.” Clearly a case of AI gone bad!
