100.1. Robert E. Howard, A GENT FROM BEAR CREEK – hardcover published in the U.K. by Herbert Jenkins in 1937.  REH’s first book, a collection of his Breckinridge Elkins stories.  Incredibly rare, fewer than 20 copies are known to exist.  Alistair purchased this from a London bookshop.  In a color copy DJ that Alistair got from Glenn Lord (only one original DJ is known to exist in private hands; Glenn owned that one at the time).  The jewel of any REH book collection!

100.2 Edward R. Home-Gall, “THE HUMAN BAT V THE ROBOT GANGSTER” – published in London by Mark Goulden Ltd. in 1950 as Volume 2 in The Fantasy Library.  Exceedingly scarce.

CURRENT BID $170 – BIDDER #329

100.3 JUICY TALES – 11/29 – the first and only issue; with its second issue, it was renamed Joy Stories (nearly equally as rare).  Published by Merwil Publishing, this was one of Harry Donenfeld’s first pulp publishing companies (in conjunction with Frank Armer and Merle Hersey).  Donenfeld and Armer would later launch Culture Publications and the Spicy chain of pulps, and Donenfeld would later take over what became DC Comics and publish Superman.  Very scarce.

101. H.P. LOVECRAFT SIGNED POSTCARD TO ALFRED GALPIN, JR. – postmarked 1923 (month and day are illegible).  As was customary with his correspondence with his friend Galpin, HPL referred to himself as “grandpa” and signed himself with made up names, here, “Ye obt grandsire Theobaldus.”  HPL’s “Polaris” first appeared in the December 1920 issue of Galpin’s amateur press periodical, “The Philosopher.”  A short time before the date of this postcard, during late July or early August 1922, Galpin introduced HPL to the fiction of Clark Ashton Smith, giving him a copy of Smith’s “The Star-Treader and Other Poems.”  In the 1930’s, Galpin attended the Sorbonne in Paris and became a classical music composer.  In 1937, following HPL’s passing, Galpin wrote a piano solo, “Lament for H.P.L.”, the score of which was included in Arkham House’s HPL book, “Marginalia.”  According to “An H.P. Lovecraft Encyclopedia” by S. T. Joshi and David E. Schultz, most of HPL’s correspondence to Galpin has either been lost or destroyed.

102. RICHARD F. SEARIGHT SIGNED POSTCARD TO ROBERT BARLOW – postmarked June 6, 1935.  Searight was a pulp author, including some appearances in Weird Tales.  Both he and Barlow were part of the Lovecraft Circle; HPL’s letters to Searight were collected by Necronomicon Press in 1982 and, along with letters to E. Hoffmann Price, by Hippocampus Press in 2021.  This postcard was prompted by correspondence from HPL to Searight.
